The M 550 D is responsible for the sound effects from the rear and other spatial details. To ensure that the sound field remains as diffuse and non-directional as possible, this speaker operates as a dipole. Here, one 130 mm woofer and two 25 mm tweeters are installed in each speaker and radiate sound forwards and backwards in opposite directions to each other. This results in a diffuse sound field and keeps direct sound to a minimum so that listeners are not able to locate the source of the sound. This provides listeners with the impression of being fully immersed in a three-dimensional soundscape. The patented THX® dipole circuitry provides linear frequency response for the effect channels from 80 Hz upwards.
